Why I’ve Become Obsessed with Organizational Culture: Scaling the Soul

After a decade of community management, I’ve reached a surprising conclusion: Communities don't scale. Culture does.

The Wellness Problem: The Scaling Paradox

The "Wellness Problem" for growing groups is the "Scaling Paradox." As a community grows beyond the Dunbar Number (150), it loses its "Soul"—that feeling of intimacy and direct connection that made it special in the first place. This leads to fragmentation, loss of purpose, and the inevitable "Ghost Town" effect.

The Root Cause: Scaling Connection, not Structure

The root cause is trying to scale Connection (which is human-to-human and limited) rather than scaling Culture (which is systemic and infinitely replicable). We try to keep everyone in one giant room rather than building the architecture for a "Network of Rooms."

The CSD Resolution: Cultural Networks

To solve for scaling, we must shift our focus from "Community Management" to Culture Architecture:

  1. Culture as the Linchpin: Culture is the invisible medium that ensures all fragments of a scaling organization remain aligned with the same core values.
  2. Network of Nodes: Instead of one large group, build a network of smaller, interconnected groups (Pods/Prides) that share a common "Cultural Bedrock."
  3. From Intimacy to Impact: Accepting that as you scale, the focus must shift from "Direct Relationship" to "Shared Impact."

Culture is the only thing that allows an organization to grow without losing its heart. It is the "Operating System" that ensures the soul of the work survives the expansion.

Communities are for connection. Culture is for evolution.
